In 1595 the German engraver and publisher Johann Theodor De Bry published an alphabet of extraordinary beauty: 24 illustrations in a “grotesque” style. In practice, on the structure of each letter of the alphabet De Bry built a scene where, alongside a character from the biblical tradition, other “actors” move, together with animals, fruit, vegetables, weapons, work tools, musical instruments and etc.
Many of those figures are reminiscent of the ARCANA OF THE TAROT.
The mystical and magical power of the alphabet must be highlighted because, according to the Kabbalistic tradition, were the means by which the Creator gave shape to creation. We know that De Bry, friend and publisher of important Rosicrucian Masters, was no stranger to Kabbalah. This gives his work an even deeper meaning.
De Bry’s engravings were published in 2023 by Rinascimento Italian Style Art in the form of a Tarot deck edited by the historian Giordano Berti. Thus was born the “Tarot of Grotesques”, whose beauty is enhanced by the vivid colors that the Milanese painter Miriam Laffranchi patiently assigned to each Arcanum.
